Asclepias subulata
$3.99
Asclepias subulata grows wild in the hot, dry Sonoran and Mojave deserts in the Southwest U.S. Long, flexible greyish-green stems grow 3' tall.
The 3' stems are mostly leafless, like a cluster of skinny horsetails growing from nowhere. After a rain, tiny leaves appear, and spherical clusters of small, yellowish flowers bloom at the tips. Monarchs seem to find them on their long migration.
Desert Milkweed is found in washes, on slopes, often in partly shaded locations. They need dry heat, sandy soil, and almost no water. Right at home in a xeriscape garden.
